Surrounded by the pristine nature of Gangwon-do, Gongjak Mountain (elevation 887.4m) is best visited during autumn in October when the red maple leaf tunnel is spectacular. Visualizing spicy water chicken galbi accompanied by savory buckwheat crepes at the foot of the hill makes the final steps to the peak feel effortless. Post-hike, dining at a local valley restaurant is the ultimate reward.
”It was selected in consideration of its beautiful scenery, including dense forests and Suta Valley. The name of the mountain comes from the fact that its shape resembles a peacock with its wings spread. Sutasa Temple, where volumes 17 and 18 of Wolinseokbo, Treasure No. 745, are preserved, and Suta Valley, a 20-ri valley from Sutasa Temple to Nocheon-ri, are especially famous.
This is a course where you go into the front of the mountain, look at its face, go over the top of its head, and take the nearest road. The starting point is Guneop Bridge on National Highway 56. Going up Guneopcheon Stream, you cross the water five times. The third time, when you pass the bridge next to the farmhouse with the red roof, you can see the peak at its best. This stream path turns into a valley path as it passes the county park information sign at the entrance to Ttemegigol, and after Gongjak Falls, it becomes a mountain path. There are often dangerous parts when climbing up a rock hill, so if you are accompanying a beginner, prepare an assistant. However, since the summit, which was difficult to climb, is occupied by a forest fire observation tower and surrounded by a barbed wire fence, I take off my backpack at the rock peak 20 meters away. The descent begins by entering the eastern tomb at the three-way intersection where there is a signpost and a pile of stones on the south side of the summit. After passing about 20 meters of rock with a rope attached, go down the steep slope of Namneung at the three-way intersection with a signpost.
The starting point is Hongcheon. There are 52 at Dong Seoul Terminal and 41 at Sangbong Terminal. When using Guneop-ri as the starting point, take a local bus to Eron that runs every hour, or take a bus to Seongsan that runs 15 times to Gulun-ri, get off at Songjeong, and walk about 2km. Local buses run 3 times to Suta Temple and Sinbong-ri, and to the entrance of Gongjakgol, take the bus bound for Mulgol 3 times and get off at the open-air intersection. Take New National Road No. 6 and No. 44, which is used to go to Seoraksan Mountain. To get to Gulun-ri and Guneop-ri (National Road 56), just follow the signboard, but in Dong-myeon, there is no signboard on the new national road, so go into town, pass the county office, and follow local road 444.
