Surrounded by the pristine nature of Gangwon-do, Gariwangsan Mountain (elevation 1561.9m) is best visited during mid-winter in January when the snow flowers bloom brilliantly. Visualizing aromatic Gondre namul (thistle) rice and chewy potato ongsimi at the foot of the hill makes the final steps to the peak feel effortless. Post-hike, dining at a local valley restaurant is the ultimate reward.
”The scenery is so beautiful that it is said to be one of the eight scenic views of Mt. Gariwang, it is home to a superb forest of broad-leaved trees, and is famous nationwide as a natural habitat for wild greens. In particular, there is a yew colony at the center of the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range, which has been designated as a forest genetic resource protection forest and a natural recreation forest. It has great scenic and ecological value. It is the source of Odaecheon and Joyang River, which flow into Seondonggang River, and is famous for Ice Cave, a limestone jointed cave. The name of the mountain comes from its appearance resembling a large pile of rice or wood.
From the bus terminus in Baekil-dong, Haanmi 5-ri, Daehwa-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun, go up the paved road for about 2km toward Dochi-dong and the road splits toward Jungwangsan Mountain. After crossing the valley, you will soon see a simple water supply source, and if you climb 50 meters further, you will see Cheondanggol Mountain Lodge and Seonghwangdang. The road diverges here. After leaving the forest road, take the left road and follow the gentle path along the Cheondanggol valley line for 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach an altitude of 1160m. It only takes 30 minutes to reach the top of Jungwangsan Mountain, which is a helicopter site. The road from Jungwangsan Mountain to Majangchi and Gariwangsan Sangbong and Jungbong has several bends, but it is easy to hike. However, the road down from Jungbong to Gariwangsan Natural Recreation Forest is very steep. The ridge course only takes about 9 hours to hike, so if you are hiking on a day, you should set off early in the morning considering the time. It is difficult to find drinking water on the ridge, so prepare in advance.
