Surrounded by the pristine nature of Gangwon-do, Taehwasan Mountain (elevation 1027.5m) is best visited during autumn in October when the red maple leaf tunnel is spectacular. Visualizing spicy water chicken galbi accompanied by savory buckwheat crepes at the foot of the hill makes the final steps to the peak feel effortless. Post-hike, dining at a local valley restaurant is the ultimate reward.

The Yeongchun ~ Summit ~ Gossi Cave or Palgoe-ri, Palgoe-ri ~ Summit ~ Yeongchun or Gossi Cave course is good for viewing Taehwasan Mountain. The fastest route to the summit is the course with Yeongchun as the starting point. If you get off at Yeongchun and cross Bukbyeok Bridge, you will see Taehwasan Mountain. Walk along the road for about 20 minutes and climb up the path next to the zelkova tree. If you climb the zigzag mountain path for 40 minutes, you will reach the cremation rock with a basin measuring over 1,000 pyeong. In Hwagam, fill the water with evening water. It takes 10 minutes between Hwagamam and the pine forest tunnel to reach Jureung, an intersection. After passing Peak 897 on the gently uphill road to the north, there is a silver grass field measuring several hundred pyeong. Go straight north, pass 1001 Peak, and pass through a colony of oak trees to reach the summit of Mt. Taehwasan. There is a rocky area from the summit to Peak 914, and if you go down the eastern road from the three-way intersection, you will soon see a spring. Past the spring and up to Gossi Cave is a 45-degree slope of rocky and tattered terrain, so be careful.
