"Excellent weather conditions for climbing."
Situated in the tranquil heartland of Korea, Gyeryongsan Mountain (846.5m) is best visited during early summer in May when fresh vegetation brings delightful scents. Walking up the gentle dirt trails leads to an open vista. Indulging in shrimp and mushroom hot pot alongside crispy pan-fried minnows afterward captures the genuine hospitality of the region.
”Since ancient times, it has been referred to as Seoak, one of the five peaks of Silla. In consideration of the fact that it was designated as a national park in 1968 as a mountain called Jungak of the three peaks during the Joseon Dynasty, the name Gyeryongsan Mountain originated from the fact that the ridge of Seonjeonsan Mountain resembles the shape of a dragon wearing a chicken's crest, and is mentioned in "Jeonggamrok (鄭鑑錄)" It is one of the Ten Victorious Lands. Donghaksa Temple (東鶴寺), founded by Hwehwasang in the second year of King Seongdeok of Silla (724), and Gapsa Temple (甲寺), founded by Goguryeo's Adohwasang during the reign of King Guisin of Baekje (420) are famous.
Since access to Sangbong Cheonhwangbong is impossible at Gyeryongsan Mountain due to a national facility, the hike connecting Gapsa Temple and Donghaksa Temple is mainly done. The siblings' top course is the most common, but various combinations are also made, including a valley course that passes by Eunseon Falls, a natural tomb from Gwaneumbong to Sambulbong, and Shinwonsa Temple, Sangsinri, and Park Jeongja three-way intersection as the starting point. The Nammae Top Course, which is also the shortest course, is best because the road from Deulmeori to Nammae Tower is smooth. Near the end of the climb, the Brother and Sister Pagoda stands under the shade of giant zelkova trees, and the atmosphere feels like the hometown of a legend. There is probably no one who does not know the contents of the legend. However, the fact is that the Silla people built a 7-story pagoda next to the original Baekje 5-story pagoda (the remaining 4-story pagoda) to show off the power of their rulers, but the people of the Near East, descendants of Baekje, turned it over into the legend of the monk and Sangju maiden. When you pass by Sambulbong Peak and reach Geumjandi Pass, you can see the famous peaks of Gyeryongsan Mountain, including Yeoncheonbong Peak and Munpilbong Peak, and the blue Geumgang River in the distance.
The starting point is Gongju and Daejeon.
