Embracing fertile plains and highly picturesque valleys, Gangcheon Mountain (585.8m) is truly magnificent in cherry blossoms and flower petals rain down in April. Climbing past the tranquil temple courtyard leads to an immense view. A feast of Jeolla-style mountain vegetable bibimbap and freshwater crab soup afterward completes the journey.
”It is designated as a county park (designated in 1981), and Gangcheonsa Temple (剛泉寺), which was opened by State Preceptor Doseon during the reign of Queen Jinseong of Silla (887) in consideration of the beautiful scenery and good view of Gangcheon Valley, and the name of the mountain is derived from Gangcheonsa Temple (剛泉寺). Geumseongsanseong Fortress, which is believed to have been built during the Three Kingdoms period, is famous.
It is a worthwhile course that includes viewing the 5-ri Gorge from Sinseonbong Peak, the watchtower at the core, passing through the summit and descending to Deulmeori. Generally, you descend right from the summit, but there is no need to look twice at the valley, which has been overused by many people. You can walk barefoot until you pass the ticket office, Byeongpung Falls, Iljumun Gate, and reach Gangcheonsa Temple. This is because it is a flat land with almost no uphill slopes, and Sunchang-gun laid beach sand. It's good for a walk with the elderly, but the artificial waterfalls appear when you can forget about them, and the reservoirs are built more than in the middle of the field, so it doesn't have a natural taste. Next, stop by Bigak Samindae (三印臺) on the lawn across the valley and enter Hwangwoojegol. This is because the uphill path to Sinseonbong is easier than the overpass. At Sinseonbong Peak, you can see not only the canyon, but also the appearance of Wangjabong Peak, Sangbong Peak of Gangcheon Mountain, standing shoulder to shoulder with Hyeongjebong Peak (505m) and Gitdaebong Peak (571.9m). This is half of the road ahead. Once you cross the skybridge, you begin a full-fledged hike. Like any other mountain, if you endure boredom and walk in silence, you will reach the top. When descending, head east from Bukneung Intersection to Gitdaebong Peak. After going to the Cheonjibong intersection, go downhill into the canyon and reach Geumgang Bridge.
The starting point is Sunchang. A local bus runs to the Gangcheonsan parking lot every 5 minutes. It's 9 kilometers away, so you can walk. There are 6 express buses to Sunchang from Gangnam Terminal in Seoul. There are buses from Incheon, Daegu, and Gwangju to cities other than Jeollabuk-do. Honam Expressway Okgwa IC - Take National Highway No. 27 toward Sunchang. In Sunchang-eup, transfer to National Road No. 24 toward Damyang, then turn right at Baeksan-ri and follow Local Road No. 793. Turn left near the end of Gangcheon Reservoir.
