Embracing fertile plains and highly picturesque valleys, flagpole peak (367.8m) is truly magnificent in cherry blossoms and flower petals rain down in April. Climbing past the tranquil temple courtyard leads to an immense view. A feast of Jeolla-style mountain vegetable bibimbap and freshwater crab soup afterward completes the journey.
”The entire island was designated as a natural protection area (in 1965) due to its great ecological value, with vines, arborvitae, and camellia forests growing naturally, and it was selected in consideration of the fact that it was designated as Dadohaehaesang National Park (in 1981). As the name suggests, it is a rock peak shaped like a flagpole and is the highest peak of Hongdo Island. Gitdaebong Peak harmonizes with the coastal landscape, including Dongnimmun Gate and Seokhwa Cave, to form the beautiful scenery of Hongdo.
The Gitdaebong hike starts from Hongdo Branch in District 1, passes the summit of Gitdaebong, and ends in District 2, a distance of less than 4 kilometers. This hiking trail is well paved because it is also a daily path, but the trail is so poorly maintained that it is difficult to distinguish the path for about 200 meters before reaching the village of 2-gu. However, there are no problems with hiking. If you stay at a bed and breakfast, they will take you on a boat from District 2 to the dock in District 1, so you can enjoy the sunset at your leisure. However, since this hiking trail is a non-statutory trail under the National Park Planning Act, tourists other than Hongdo residents are not allowed to use it. This is because the entire island is designated as a natural monument. Therefore, Shinan-gun Office's Hongdo Management Office plans to improve the road within the year and install a wooden deck to protect surrounding vegetation, allowing tourists to freely climb Gitdaebong Peak as early as next year.
