Situated in the tranquil heartland of Korea, Tiantai Mountain (714.3m) is best visited during mid-summer in July when cool stream waters run under green shades. Walking up the gentle dirt trails leads to an open vista. Indulging in spicy and soothing local marsh snail soup (Olgaengi-guk) afterward captures the genuine hospitality of the region.
”It was selected for its scenic beauty, so much so that it is called Seoraksan Mountain in North Chungcheong Province. It is famous for the Yeongguksa Temple founded by State Preceptor Daegak Uicheon of the Goryeo Dynasty, the ginkgo tree that is about 500 years old (Natural Monument No. 223), the three-story stone pagoda (Treasure No. 533), and the Monument to State Preceptor Wongak (Treasure No. 534).
The hike begins by entering Cheontaedongcheon from the Cheontaesan entrance parking lot in Nugyo-ri, Yangsan-myeon (30 minutes from Deulmeori). After passing Jinju Falls Intersection and Samdan Falls, you can reach Mangtap Intersection where you can see Cheontaesan Mountain at a glance if you climb the wooden stairs. The beginning of Course A is a ridge road covered in pine trees, but you soon encounter a rocky section. There is a safe detour in the rocky section. After passing the third rock wall section of about 75m and a few more rock sections, you reach the main ridge three-way intersection. It's about 7 minutes to the summit. The descent returns to the main ridge intersection and follows the southeast ridge. If you pass the B and C course intersections that appear after the heliport and follow course D, you will reach a rest area with the best view of Cheontaesan Mountain. From here, you pass Namgogae and go down to Yeongguksa Temple. It only takes 7 minutes from Mangtap Intersection to Mangtap Peak (Whale Rock and Three-story Stone Pagoda).
The starting point is Yeongdong. Yeongdong - Cheontaesan 06:20~19:10 City bus (☎043-742-3971) operates 6 times a day. It takes 50 minutes. Last bus from Cheontaesan to Yeongdong at 19:50.
