Gamaksan Mountain (674.9m) offers a rugged yet accessible getaway near Seoul, particularly recommended during early spring in May when fresh green foliage bursts into life. Standing on the rocky crest to catch the breeze, followed by handmade tofu and pork belly wrapped in pine nuts for a nutty finish on your way down, guarantees a perfect weekend climbing experience.
”It has long been one of the five peaks of Gyeonggi Province and is equipped with waterfalls, valleys, and rock walls, and was selected for its good views of the Imjin River and Songaksan Mountain in Gaeseong. There is Ungye Falls, which has abundant water, and at the top is the Queen Bitteul Monument (Paju-gun Local Relic No. 8), whose letters are all worn away and cannot be read. The theory is divided into the ‘Seolin-gwi (薛人貴)’ and the ‘Monument to King Jinheung’. There is Im Keok-jeong's cave under Janggunbong Peak, where Im Keok-jeong is said to have been hiding to avoid being pursued by the government forces.
The hike, which begins at Seolma Bridge at the entrance to Beomryunsa Temple, passes through the forest of meditation in front of Beomryunsa Temple and continues along a somewhat rough stony path littered with large and small stones. You will come across three crossroads in the Forest of Meeting. The left path takes you directly to the summit by climbing the Kdaebong Peak ridge, and the right path takes you up the ridge past Imkeokjeongbong Peak and Anbu Intersection to the summit. Between these two ridges is the smoothest hiking trail, which follows the valley to the summit. On one side of the summit is the Queen Bitteul Monument, designated as Paju City Local Relic No. 8. The letters on this stele are all worn out and cannot be read, but they are divided into the Seolinguibiseol and King Jinheungpurunbiseol. The Seolmari Gamaksan area is a naturally occurring amusement park with an admission fee of 1,000 won for adults and 500 won for children. During peak season, you must park your vehicle at the Gamaksan parking lot 500 meters below Jeokseong direction and start hiking.
