Surrounded by the pristine nature of Gangwon-do, Eungbongsan Mountain (elevation 999.7m) is best visited during autumn in October when the red maple leaf tunnel is spectacular. Visualizing spicy water chicken galbi accompanied by savory buckwheat crepes at the foot of the hill makes the final steps to the peak feel effortless. Post-hike, dining at a local valley restaurant is the ultimate reward.
”It is suitable as a valley exploration course as it is surrounded by several beautiful valleys. It was selected for its beautiful scenery, including dense forests, natural open-air hot springs Deokgu Hot Springs, waterfalls in Yongsogol, and many cows. There is a legend that the Uljinjo clan found a falcon lost while falconry on this mountain, named the mountain Eungbong, and used the tomb site of his parents nearby, and the family prospered. It is famous as a place where you can view Baekamsan Mountain, Tonggosan Mountain, Hambaeksan Mountain, and Taebaeksan Mountain in the distance from the summit.
Yongsogol takes over 7 hours to reach the summit, requires extensive rock climbing experience and equipment, and is a dangerous course to hike or camp during the monsoon season and on rainy days. Therefore, the general course of Eungbongsan Mountain has no choice but to climb from Deokgu Hot Springs to the top of Onjeonggol and then return to Onjeonggol. In the case of Onjeonggol, the hiking trail runs through a valley, so it is best to avoid hiking when it is raining. Enter the valley to the left of Deokgu Hot Springs, pass Yongso Falls, and walk another hour for about an hour to reach Wontang, the site of an old open-air hot spring. As the water level decreases, the road begins to become bumpy and soon enters the ridge uphill. If you continue into the valley and enter the waterfall valley from the auraji called Sadumok, at the end, the middle part is cut to form a water valley, and there is a 60-meter drop that flows down to the bottom. It is difficult for beginners because you have to climb up to the middle water valley. The descent takes the long ridge road leading to Deokgu Hot Springs.
