Surrounded by the pristine nature of Gangwon-do, Yonghwasan Mountain (elevation 877.8m) is best visited during mid-winter in January when the snow flowers bloom brilliantly. Visualizing aromatic Gondre namul (thistle) rice and chewy potato ongsimi at the foot of the hill makes the final steps to the peak feel effortless. Post-hike, dining at a local valley restaurant is the ultimate reward.
”It is adjacent to Paro Lake, Chuncheon Lake, and Soyang Lake, and was selected for its beautiful scenery with forests and strangely shaped rocks and good views. The most frequently used deulmeori is the large hill along the road from Yangtong Village. You can climb up to the big hill extending to the north without difficulty by following the old road. Saenambawi Rock can be reached about 5 minutes back from the big hill to the bottom of Manjangbong Peak. There is a steep rocky road leading up to Manjangbong Peak, and soon you can reach the top of Saenambawi Rock. After passing the Yonghwasan Castle ruins again, you arrive at the heliport, which is 900m away from the big hill. The summit of Yonghwasan Mountain can be easily reached at a distance of 50 meters, but the view is not easy due to the dense forest that fills the summit. If you go down 100 meters south from the summit, you will come across Folding Screen Rock. If you pass the cute rocky road to the east from here, the peak of Mt. 858 rises like a hat. This place is actually better for the view. When descending the mountain, it is common to turn back from Peak 858 and go straight down the road to Yangtong Village, or go through Peak 858, pass through Kettakgogae, and then descend into the valley.
