Soyosan Mountain (587.5m) offers a rugged yet accessible getaway near Seoul, particularly recommended during early spring in May when fresh green foliage bursts into life. Standing on the rocky crest to catch the breeze, followed by handmade tofu and pork belly wrapped in pine nuts for a nutty finish on your way down, guarantees a perfect weekend climbing experience.
”Although it is small in scale, it has beautiful scenery such as Sangbaekundae, Habaekundae, and Jungbaekundae, and is highly popular among climbers. It was selected in consideration of the fact that it was designated as a national tourist site in 1981. It is famous for Wonhyo Falls, Cheongnyang Falls, Seonyeotang Cliff, and fall foliage. It is said to have been founded by Master Wonhyo in the first year of King Muyeol of Silla (654).
The hike starts from the Soyo-dong parking lot. After passing through the Iljumun gate with the words “Soyosan Jajaeam” written on it, you will hear the loud sound of water and Wonhyo Falls will appear. From here, the road to the summit branches off to the south. If you cross Songni Bridge below the waterfall and follow the left side of the valley, you will reach Wonhyodae, a rock that rises like a cliff. Soon you will see Sesimgyo Bridge and pass through the Baekunam Stone Wall Road to Jajaeam Hermitage. In the valley next to Jajaeam, there is a 20-meter-high Cheongnyang Falls and a mineral spring next to Nahanjeon, which was made using a rock cave. For the actual hike, the Ambongneung Trail, which climbs from the left of Nahanjeon to Jungbaekundae, awaits. The road from Jungbaekundae to Sangbaekundae at the end is flat, but there is a cliff on the right. After looking down at the western valley from Sangbaekundae, you pass through Naecheo Folding Screen Rock and Nahandae to reach Uisangdae. In the next valley, we reach the descent, Gujeolteo, and Wonhyo Falls.
Take the Gyeongwon Line train and get off at Soyosan Station, or take a local bus that runs every 20 minutes from Uijeongbu Intercity Bus Terminal, or a direct bus to Jeongok that runs every 25 minutes. The eastern half of Seoul uses National Highway No. 3, and the western half uses National Highway No. 39, which is adjacent to the Seoul Suburban Line.
