Surrounded by the pristine nature of Gangwon-do, Myeongseongsan Mountain (elevation 922m) is best visited during mid-winter in January when the snow flowers bloom brilliantly. Visualizing aromatic Gondre namul (thistle) rice and chewy potato ongsimi at the foot of the hill makes the final steps to the peak feel effortless. Post-hike, dining at a local valley restaurant is the ultimate reward.
”It forms the water system of Dopyeongcheon (都坪川), Yeongpyeongcheon (永平川), and Hantangang River. It was selected in consideration of the steepness of the mountain and the beautiful scenery with rocks here and there, and is surrounded by Sambuyeon Falls to the north of the mountain and Sanjeong Lake to the south. According to legend, it is famous as the place where Gungye was killed while being chased by Wang Geon.
Sanjeong Lake, located in Yeongbuk-myeon, Pocheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, is the starting point of the hike. When you reach the Sanjeong Lake parking lot, it is divided into the ‘Jainsa’ road, the ‘Chaekbawi’ road, and the ‘Biseon Falls’ road. Take the ‘Jainsa’ road and pass the signpost to reach the entrance to the valley. From here, the real hiking begins. The hiking trail leading to the Jain Temple grounds gradually becomes steeper and enters a canyon. There is a rope installed on the rock ridge you encounter before reaching the col, so there is no major difficulty in hiking. After passing through this section and reaching the ridge extending to the summit, Sanjeong Lake begins to come into view. Continue north, pass the silver grass ridge, and after about an hour, you will reach Samgakbong Peak, 903 meters above sea level. From Samgakbong Peak to the top of Myeongseongsan Mountain, there are four cute peaks. However, it takes about 4 hours to descend from the summit to Sana Pass in the southwest, so the course from Samgakbong Peak to the summit of Myeongseongsan Mountain is a bit difficult for a day hike, so it is better to descend from Samgakbong towards Deungryong Falls. Chaekbawi Ridge is good for silver grass hiking.
