Surrounded by the pristine nature of Gangwon-do, Taebaeksan Mountain (elevation 1566.7m) is best visited during mid-winter in January when the snow flowers bloom brilliantly. Visualizing aromatic Gondre namul (thistle) rice and chewy potato ongsimi at the foot of the hill makes the final steps to the peak feel effortless. Post-hike, dining at a local valley restaurant is the ultimate reward.
”It has been called the famous mountain of the Samhan since ancient times. It was selected for its outstanding scenery, such as alpine plants growing wild on the top of the mountain and the snowy scenery of yew colonies covered with white snow in winter, and the fact that it was designated as a provincial park (1989). According to the Samguk Sagi, there is a record that the king himself offered a heavenly offering at the Cheonje Altar at the top of the mountain. Manggyeongsa Temple and Baekdansa Temple are famous.
This is the route that most hikers take. You have to go all the way to Sangbong and Gitdaebong peaks, but since the mountain is quite far away and there is even a wireless transmission tower, you just end up returning from peak 8. Deulmeori is to the left of Neopsa Temple. If you follow the new road paved with persimmon stones, a communal kitchen will appear in the pine forest. Then, as the view opens up, a wide field spreads out, and Palyeong Mountain Lodge can be seen in the distance. After passing Palyeongsanjang, there is a valley road. If it is not very dry, you can draw water from the Gaji Valley that crosses the hiking trail. The road up to Heungbawi Rock is as good as if you had cut grass. Peak 1 is located right above the rock. Since it is a returning peak, I am in a hurry to get to the second peak, so I try to find a way to the top. It is a flat rock at the top, so it is perfect for mountain ancestral rites. Peak 6 at the end of the long wire ladder is the highlight, so if you don't have time, descend at the intersection between peak 7. However, to see Haechang Bay in the southern sea, you have to go to Peak 8. The descent begins with climbing the mountainside to Mount Sanjang. From Mountsan, go down the valley road.
