Situated in the tranquil heartland of Korea, Tiantai Mountain (714.3m) is best visited during mid-summer in July when cool stream waters run under green shades. Walking up the gentle dirt trails leads to an open vista. Indulging in spicy and soothing local marsh snail soup (Olgaengi-guk) afterward captures the genuine hospitality of the region.
”Mountain Features & Selection Reason
It was selected for its scenic beauty, so much so that it is called Seoraksan Mountain in North Chungcheong Province. It is famous for the Yeongguksa Temple founded by State Preceptor Daegak Uicheon of the Goryeo Dynasty, the ginkgo tree that is about 500 years old (Natural Monument No. 223), the three-story stone pagoda (Treasure No. 533), and the Monument to State Preceptor Wongak (Treasure No. 534).
Climbing Points & Features
[Weirdly rocky peaks and beautiful mountains] Cheontaesan Mountain (714.7m) is a mountain that creates a spectacular view with strangely shaped rocks and strange stones everywhere. There are many hiking trails, including a rock climbing course where you can climb strangely shaped rocks that look like they were embroidered with silk, using ropes, so many hiking enthusiasts are constantly visiting the area, and it is also in the spotlight as a family hiking destination. In particular, Yangsan Eight Scenic Views is the mountain where British history begins as the first scenic spot, and many cultural relics add to its mystery. The valley scenery leading up to Yeongguksa Temple is very beautiful, and the Yongchu Falls (three tiers) pouring down from strangely shaped cliffs and ginkgo trees estimated to be around 1,000 years old greet climbers visiting Cheontaesan Mountain. Cheontaesan Mountain is home to 4 treasures, 2 local cultural assets, and 1 natural monument, making it a place where history lives on. In addition, there is Oksaebong, where King Gongmin is said to have hidden the royal seal, and Yukjogol, where the 6th ancestral dynasty is said to have been located, making it a place that retains the scent of history along with a thousand years of British history.
The hike begins by entering Cheontaedongcheon from the Cheontaesan entrance parking lot in Nugyo-ri, Yangsan-myeon (30 minutes from Deulmeori). After passing Jinju Falls Intersection and Samdan Falls, you can reach Mangtap Intersection where you can see Cheontaesan Mountain at a glance if you climb the wooden stairs. The beginning of Course A is a ridge road covered in pine trees, but you soon encounter a rocky section. There is a safe detour in the rocky section. After passing the third rock wall section of about 75m and a few more rock sections, you reach the main ridge three-way intersection. It's about 7 minutes to the summit. The descent returns to the main ridge intersection and follows the southeast ridge. If you pass the B and C course intersections that appear after the heliport and follow course D, you will reach a rest area with the best view of Cheontaesan Mountain. From here, you pass Namgogae and go down to Yeongguksa Temple. It only takes 7 minutes from Mangtap Intersection to Mangtap Peak (Whale Rock and Three-story Stone Pagoda).
