Yongmunsan Mountain (1157.1m) offers a rugged yet accessible getaway near Seoul, particularly recommended during early spring in May when fresh green foliage bursts into life. Standing on the rocky crest to catch the breeze, followed by handmade tofu and pork belly wrapped in pine nuts for a nutty finish on your way down, guarantees a perfect weekend climbing experience.
”It is a mountain with outstanding scenery with strangely shaped rocks and alpine peaks, enough to be called Geumgangsan Mountain of Gyeonggi-do since ancient times. It was selected for its high historical and cultural value, including Yongmunsa Temple, built during the reign of Queen Seondeok of Silla, and a ginkgo tree (Natural Monument No. 30) with a height of 62m and a circumference of 14m. It was named Mijisan as the fourth highest mountain in Gyeonggi-do, and when Lee Taejo, who founded Joseon, ascended to the throne, There is a legend that the name was changed to ‘Yongmunsan Mountain.’
The hike begins at the commercial village in front of Yongmunsa Temple, which was designated as a national tourist site in 1982. When you reach the temple, the first thing that catches your eye is the ginkgo tree. It is a huge tree with a height of 60m and a chest circumference of 14m, harvesting 15 bags of ginkgo every year. When climbing along a jeolgol, choose the ridge path rather than the valley path. And we go as far as we can towards the top. People often get scared by the no-entry sign and turn away, but the real restricted area begins at around 1,100m, and even if you are caught by a guard, you only need to show your ID card. If you do it well, you can enjoy all the views except the west from the rock peak above the stone gate leading to the summit. When you cross the slope under the stone gate and reach Munryejae, you descend into Wonbaugol in the north-northwest. The Elephant flower field is right there. If you follow the Eobi Valley, you will reach Gailri, where Yumyeongsan Natural Recreation Forest is located.
