Embracing fertile plains and highly picturesque valleys, Seonunsan Mountain (334.7m) is truly magnificent in the entire landscape blazes with red maple leaves in October. Climbing past the tranquil temple courtyard leads to an immense view. A feast of bamboo tube rice with pan-fried flatbed cockles afterward completes the journey.
”Although the mountain is not very large, it has a dense forest and is made up of strangely shaped rocks here and there, so the scenery is outstanding. It has great ecological value, including the Camellia Forest, which is Natural Monument No. 184, and was designated as a provincial park (1979). Seonunsa Temple, founded by Seonsa Geomdan in the 24th year of King Wideok of Baekje (577), and a 500-year-old camellia tree. Seonunsa Temple’s camellia forest, which is home to a colony of over 3,000 trees, is famous.
This course goes halfway around the west side of Seonun Valley, which forms a Y shape, and then down to the west Gaji Valley. It is also the most loved hiking trail as it is packed with key attractions. You start hiking from the entrance of Seonunsa Temple, a thousand-year-old temple, towards Seoksangam Rock. After passing the green tea fields lined up on both sides, you will soon reach Seoksangam Rock. Fill your canteen here. If you climb Maijae and walk as if taking a walk, you will reach Dosolsan Mountain, the mountain behind Seonunsa Temple, also known as Suribong. Basically, it is a rocky ridge, so you can see Seonunsa Temple from here and there as if looking down from an airplane. In the Gaeipalsan area, you unexpectedly come across a reed forest on the mountain. Ichae, which can only be seen in Taebaek, a limestone terrain, is also present here. When you climb Cheonmabong Peak, the best crags in the land, and indeed in East Asia, are spread out beneath your feet. This is because the porous andesan rock walls, like the limestone walls of France and Spain, allow climbers to climb even at angles exceeding 90 degrees. Those who are not expert mountain climbers look for a turtle here. The standard is the famous rock-carved Buddha carved from a turtle's nose. Sangdosol [Am] is located at the right eye site, and [lower] Manwoldae behind Dosolam and the large wall on the left side of the gorge on the way to Yongmun Cave form two feet. Seonunsan Mountain has many strangely shaped rocks, but there is nothing this exquisite.
The starting point is Gochang. From Gochang Intercity Bus Stop, direct buses run 8 times and intra-gun buses run 30 times. There are 16 express buses to Gochang from Gangnam Terminal in Seoul.
