Surrounded by the pristine nature of Gangwon-do, Baekun Mountain (Pocheon) (elevation 903.1m) is best visited during autumn in October when the red maple leaf tunnel is spectacular. Visualizing spicy water chicken galbi accompanied by savory buckwheat crepes at the foot of the hill makes the final steps to the peak feel effortless. Post-hike, dining at a local valley restaurant is the ultimate reward.
”Considering that it has a beautiful valley and unique landscapes such as valleys and cliffs in a group of high peaks such as Gwangdeoksan Mountain, Gumangbong Peak, and Bakdalbong Peak, it is famous for the Seonjeon and Baekungun Valleys and Heungryongsa Temple, which is said to have been founded by Doseon in the late Silla Dynasty.
If you go up to the back of the rest area located at Gwangdeok Pass Maru, you will see a road that turns to the left. The actual hiking trail begins here. The road to the top is clear and there are many traces of people, so it is easy to climb, but there are few signposts, so be careful when it is foggy. Also, be sure to bring plenty of water while hiking as there are no springs anywhere on the ridge. There is a spring across the street from Gwangdeok Pass. When you climb to the top, the view opens up and you can see Gwangdeoksan Mountain to the north and Gukmangbong Peak to the south. To the west is Gwaneumsan Mountain. If you descend towards Heungnyongsa Temple, the view of the ridge road is good. Baekun Valley makes you feel the depth of deep mountain valleys. There is a fork in the middle of the ridge that goes down to the valley, but it is very steep, so if you are a beginner, it is best to continue down the ridge path.
