Surrounded by the pristine nature of Gangwon-do, Bangtaesan Mountain (elevation 1445.7m) is best visited during mid-winter in January when the snow flowers bloom brilliantly. Visualizing aromatic Gondre namul (thistle) rice and chewy potato ongsimi at the foot of the hill makes the final steps to the peak feel effortless. Post-hike, dining at a local valley restaurant is the ultimate reward.
”It has high mountain peaks such as Gachilbong (1,241m), Eungboksan (1,156m), Guryongdeokbong (1,388m), and Jugeukbong (1,444m). It is so dense with trees that it is said to be the largest natural forest in Korea, and was selected in consideration of its ecological characteristics, including many rare plants and rare fish species. In Jeonggamrok, it is recorded as a place to hide from an uprising. There is a natural recreation forest, and Jeokgarigol with a 10m high waterfall and a 3m low waterfall, Bangdong mineral water, and private mineral water are famous.
This is the shortest course, starting and ending at Misan Natural Recreation Forest or a private mountain lodge in Daejin-dong. Passenger cars can travel there. The path to the private mineral water is a valley road that is not very steep. The mineral water is carbonated water like cider minus short term, and there are many stone towers around it. It was accumulated by people who came to treat gastrointestinal diseases or diabetes. Afterwards, the slope is quite steep until the ridge intersection. The main hill, where grass and trees form the peak, is gentle and soft. At the top, Daecheongbong Peak of Seoraksan Mountain stands tall, making you wonder if it is that close. Guryongdeok [Bong], where six hiking trails meet, is bare and treeless. Instead, since there are so many herbs, it is crowded with herb pickers in spring. As it is dark, when you enter the valley, you can often see damseo (潭沼) that are good for taking a breath. If you look at them, wash your face, and come down leisurely, you will already be in Daejin-dong.
