Embracing fertile plains and highly picturesque valleys, Bangjangsan Mountain (733.6m) is truly magnificent in the entire landscape blazes with red maple leaves in October. Climbing past the tranquil temple courtyard leads to an immense view. A feast of bamboo tube rice with pan-fried flatbed cockles afterward completes the journey.
”Since ancient times, it has been called the Samshinsan Mountain of Honam along with Mt. Jirisan and Mt. Mudeung. It was selected in consideration of its majestic scenery as a mountain that divides Jeollabuk-do and Jeollanam-do and the fact that it is a natural recreation forest. The old name was Bangdeungsan Mountain, and the Bangdeungsan Mountain in the Baekje song ‘Bangdeungsanga’ is Bangjangsan Mountain. From the summit, you can see the West Sea in the distance and Mudeungsan Mountain to the east.
This is the easiest course that starts from Noryeong, Galjae, 276 meters above sea level, dividing North and South Jeolla Provinces. After climbing Peak 507, where the heliport is located, we descend for a long time to the 440-meter col. After a tedious uphill climb, you reach peak 734, which has a great view. The summit begins to appear in the distance. After passing Chimney Rock, Nereok Rock, and Slab Rock, the downhill begins and drops to 600 meters. Afterwards, if you pass through the bamboo forest that exceeds the height and climb the steep slope, you will reach the beacon station. Next, pass a flat ridge with little ups and downs and reach the summit. There is also a guide map that shows Seoraebong and Yeonjibong peaks above Jureung, but this is not true. At the top, you can see at a glance the Honam vein, which curves south from Naejangsan Mountain and moves away. On the other hand, to the southwest, Muraegibong (565m), Chuknyeongsan (621m), Gosan (526.7m), Goseongsan (546m), and Taechongsan (593.3m) continue without relief. Of course, the West Sea can be seen on a clear day. On the way down to Gochang Pass, silver grass fields appear occasionally. The road down to Bangjangsan Mountain Natural Recreation Forest is quite steep, but you soon reach a forest road.
Gochang is the starting point. From Gochang, you can take the bus to Sangwol, Wolam, or Seokjeong Hot Springs every 30 minutes, and from Sinpyeong-ri, you can take the bus to Jeongeup, which runs 6 times. There are 16 express buses to Gochang from Gangnam Terminal in Seoul. Buses run to cities other than Jeollabuk-do from Gwangju and Mokpo. If you want to go to a recreational forest, take a taxi from Baekyangsa Station on the Honam Line, and if you want to go to Galjae, take a taxi from Jeongeup. When going to Galjae on the West Coast Expressway Gochang IC → Gochang direction, branch road No. 15, Honam Expressway Baekyangsa IC → Jeongeup national road No. 1 is easier than Jeongeup IC.
