Myeongji Mountain (1252.3m) offers a rugged yet accessible getaway near Seoul, particularly recommended during early spring in May when fresh green foliage bursts into life. Standing on the rocky crest to catch the breeze, followed by handmade tofu and pork belly wrapped in pine nuts for a nutty finish on your way down, guarantees a perfect weekend climbing experience.
”It is the second highest mountain in Gyeonggi-do, and is located between Gyeonggi-do's highest peak, Hwaaksan Mountain (1,468m), and Gapyeong Stream. It was selected in consideration of the majestic mountain scenery such as Kangssibong Peak, Gwimokbong Peak, Cheonggyesan Mountain, and Umokbong Peak and the fact that it was designated as a county park. It is famous for the Gapyeongcheon Valley on the east side of the mountain, which flows for about 20 km, and Myeongji Waterfall in Ikgeunri Valley. The mountains and valleys around Myeongjisan Mountain are known as the most profound valleys in Gyeonggi-do.
The mountain path, which begins in earnest after passing Seungcheonsa Temple at the head of Ikgeun-ri Valley, continues to the right (north) of the valley. Myeongji Falls is about an hour away, but you have to go down 50m from the hiking trail to see it. Mooring rocks often appear from above Myeongji Falls. Just when the valley seems boring, a fork appears on the right (northwest), and it starts steep from the beginning. This climb ends at the col between the summit and Muskebong (1013m). When you pass the summit and reach Nambong, you come to an intersection where you have to decide whether to go back to Ikgeun-ri in the east, Gwimok-ri in the west, or Baekdun-ri in the south. The closest one is Baekdun-ri, which takes 2 hours, while the farthest one, Gwimok-ri, takes 3 hours, and Ikgeun-ri takes 2 hours and 30 minutes. Ikgunikos is steep enough to have recently caused a landslide.
